Blaze Pizza History
Blaze Pizza was founded in Pasadena, California, United States by Elise and Rick Wetzel in 2012. The company is headquartered in Irvine, California. Since its founding, the company has changed the fast-food industry by allowing customers to create their own pizza.
Blaze Pizza’s commitment to high-quality ingredients helped it grow into a thriving restaurant business within four years of opening. They had previously operated Wetzel’s Pretzels restaurants and wanted to expand into a new business that would provide higher-quality ingredients at a reasonable price.
Since Blaze Pizza is in the fast-casual dining segment, the idea of building your own pizza appealed to this concept. Blaze Pizza has been recognized as one of the top restaurant chains in the US by Restaurant Business Magazine’s “Future 50” list.
As of 2015, the restaurant was ranked number 13 on the list. In 2013, Nike co-founder and chairman Phil Knight provided an undisclosed amount of funding to help Blaze Pizza grow its presence across the US.
The same year, former McDonald’s executive Dave Gibbs joined as CEO and brought a new strategy focused on franchising. This structure allowed the company to expand at a rapid rate.
By 2015, there were 100 restaurants in 26 states and the District of Columbia as well as Canada.
