Sizzler History

Sizzler Menu Prices History

Sizzler restaurant company history where Del and Helen Johnson are founders and company was founded in 1958 as Del’s Sizzler Family Steak House. It started with the first location in Culver City, California.

The family-owned business was founded by the husband and wife team, Del and Helen Johnson. They opened the doors to their very first Sizzler location on Sepulveda Boulevard in Culver City, California back in 1958.

In 1959 Del and Helen Johnson opened a second location in Torrance, California. In the early 1970s, as fast food started gaining popularity, Sizzler steak house became increasingly busy so owners Del and Helen hired managers Thomas Boggs, Joseph Whitney, and William Watson to help manage with business increasing.

The family decided to franchise their restaurants in 1972. At that time, there were over 180 Sizzler locations in operation. By 1985 Sizzler had grown to 250 company-owned and franchised restaurants.

Unfortunately by 1993 problems arose when they were forced to close down many of their unprofitable locations which caused the stock value to plummet and left it vulnerable for a hostile takeover in 1996.

Sizzler approached Landry’s Restaurants to purchase the company in 2002. The following year, Sizzler filed for bankruptcy and closed some of its restaurant locations as a result of stiff competition from other upscale steakhouses such as Morton’s Steakhouse.
