Church’s Chicken History

Chrch’s Chicken Menu Prices History

George W. Church Sr., a retired chicken incubator salesman, launched the first Church’s Chicken. The first store opened in Texas. Church’s Chicken began as a single walk-up location selling only fried Chicken, which cost 49 cents for two pieces and a roll.

Fries and jalapenos were added to the Church’s Chicken menu in 1955. Church Sr. positioned the fryers next to the takeout window so that customers could watch as their food was prepared while they waited.

By the time Church Sr. died in 1956, the business had four restaurants. Eight restaurants opened in San Antonio in 1962 when Bill Church Sr’s son, Bill Church Jr., became the company’s top executive following his father’s death.

A signature marinade developed by Church Jr. and his brother Richard in 1965 allowed the company to begin franchising in 1965. For the first time since Church Jr. joined Bamberger’s vacuum distribution company, Bamberger was hired in 1965 as the franchise director for Church’s Chicken.

Outside of San Antonio, the chain had restaurants in five other Texas cities by 1967 and had a total of 17 locations in 1968. When the Church family decided to sell their business in 1968, the limited was formed and went public the following year.

By the end of the year, Church’s Chicken had opened more than a hundred locations in seven states, attempting to make it the first Texas-based chain to go global.

Church’s Chicken inaugurated 387 new locations between 1969 and 1974. Chicken lovers from all over the world visit this place to have mouth-watering chicken meals with Jalapeno, hot sauce, and yummillicious gravy!
