Mooyah History
Mooyah began in 2007, when two friends and former classmates at the University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business – Rich Hicks and Todd Istre- opened their first restaurant in Plano, TX.
They named it “Mooyah” for a funny story about how they tried pronouncing the name of another type of submarine sandwich. As Todd recalls, “We were both saying ‘moe-uh-ty’ because we couldn’t figure out how to say ‘moa.’ Finally, we decided to go with Mooyah.
And the name stuck.” The unique business model at Mooyah involves getting people to help build their brand by paying for a meal in advance and then paying for that meal with a predetermined number of hours or “Mooyah” hours.
When guests eat at the restaurant, they leave a tip instead of paying an actual service charge. Mooyah restaurants have a vibrant and fun atmosphere, where the goal is to have customers have a great experience.
On top of that, they are focused on community outreach because they know how important the people around them are to the success of the business. Todd and Rich quickly learned that team members were investing in this vision by committing a significant amount of their time and energy without pay.
