Famous Dave’s History
Famous Dave’s restaurant company history: David W. Anderson is the founder and the company was founded in 1994, in Hayward, Wisconsin, United States.
The first location opened in the fall of 1994 in the town of Hayward, Wisconsin. It was not until 1995 that the company began to franchise its restaurants.
In 1997, the company moved its headquarters from Hayward to Minnetonka, Minnesota. Famous Dave’s reached the 500th location milestone in November 2007. As of October 2010, the company has 609 locations in 44 U.S. states and 1 Canadian province.
The company’s international locations are in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. In May of that year, the company emerged from bankruptcy and completed a recapitalization plan that reduced its debt by more than $100 million.
As part of the recapitalization plan, two investment firms—Taconic Capital Advisors and H.I.G. Capital—became the majority owners of the company. In October 2010, Famous Dave’s announced it had reached an agreement with Taconic and H.I.G. to sell a majority interest in the company to them.
As part of the agreement, Anderson will continue as CEO and maintain a minority ownership interest in the company. Under the agreement, Taconic and H.I.G. will appoint two members to the company’s board of directors.
