Taco John’s History
In 1969, Taco John’s was founded by John Turner in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The company’s first location was a small taco stand that Turner built in his uncle’s backyard. From there, the restaurant grew and began franchising in the early 1980s.
Today, Taco John’s operates over400 locations across 23 states. Most restaurants are company-owned; however, there are some franchises. In the beginning days, Turner had to hand-grill the beef for his tacos.

In 1997, the company had over 500 locations and began its international expansion by opening a restaurant in Guam. The first international location was quickly followed by one that opened in Saudi Arabia.
Taco John’s is recognized as the creator of the potato taco. They serve their taco in a folded French-style tortilla shell and fill it with beef, cheese, sour cream, salsa, and potatoes that have been mashed and then fried.
The company has also created many other menu items such as: In November 2008, Taco John’s began offering breakfast items. The first items served were burritos and a breakfast bowl complete with eggs, potatoes, bacon or sausage, nacho cheese sauce, pico de gallo salsa, and shredded cheddar all stuffed inside a tortilla complete with a side of sour cream.
