Waffle House History

Waffle House Menu Prices History

The very first Waffle House opened in Avondale Estates, Georgia, on the weekend of Labor Day in 1955. Joe Rogers Sr. (1919–2017) and Tom Forkner (1918–2017) were the driving forces behind establishing that eatery.

In 1947, Rogers worked as a short-order cook at the Toddle House in New Haven, Connecticut. When he relocated to Atlanta in 1949, he had become a regional manager for the now-defunct Toddle House chain.

While purchasing a home from Tom Forkner in Avondale Estates, he became acquainted with him. Rogers’s idea was to combine the convenience of fast food with the service of a restaurant that was open 24 hours a day.

Tom Forkner says, “You build a restaurant, and I’ll teach you how to run it.” He suggested that the eatery be dubbed “Waffle House,” as they made more money than any other item on their 16-item menu.

Waffles’ delicate nature also clarified that they were meant to be eaten in the restaurant rather than taken home. Still, it confused customers about the availability of other meals other than breakfast.

Slowly but steadily, the company started franchising its restaurants after opening its fourth location in 1960 and grew to 27 locations by the late 1960s, when growth began to accelerate.

Waffle House is privately owned and does not reveal annual sales figures, but it claims to supply 2% of the eggs used in the foodservice industry in the United States. As of 2013, Joe Rogers Jr. served as C.E.O. and retired in late 2013, and Bert Thornton serves as president.
