Chuck E. Cheese History

Chuck E. Cheese Menu Prices History

The original Chuck E. Cheese restaurant was founded in 1977 by Nolan Bushnell, who had also founded Atari, Inc. The first location opened in San Jose, California and this location was modeled after Dave & Buster’s (founded 1987).

The restaurant was a success and there are now over 700 locations in North America. The company went public on the NASDAQ stock market under the name “Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza Time Theatre Inc.”

On March 6, 1998, the company’s name was changed to CEC Entertainment, Inc. The company is a major supplier of animatronic adverts for use at the location theater stages. The first location in Canada opened in 1991 and there are now over 30 locations in Canada.

In recent years Chuck E. Cheese has expanded into a restaurant that serves pizza and other food along with arcade games. The company has been struggling with lower-than-expected sales, and there have been several lawsuits filed by customers.

The company’s financial performance declined in 2013, 2014 and 2015. In April 2015 it was announced that the founder Nolan Bushnell had left the company.

In early 2015, after a series of poor quarterly earnings reports, new CEO Steve M. Carley announced that the corporation would undertake radical changes to shore up its flagging revenues.
