Fuddruckers is a restaurant company founded by Phil Romano in 1979, primarily in Texas and the Southwestern United States. The company has grown to include over 1,700 locations worldwide, including 165 franchisee-owned restaurants internationally.
Its slogan is “Home of the World’s Greatest Hamburgers”. It is one of the largest privately owned restaurant chains in North America with an estimated annual revenue of US$378 million as of 2017. Fuddruckers is a member of the Community Food Systems Alliance.
Fuddruckers began as an unsuccessful advertisement concept by Romano in a 1962 issue of the San Antonio Express-News. The ad featured two hot dog vendors, “Pepe” and his partner Ray, who were looking to get bigger and better equipment for their business.
They contrasted this with a competitor, “Carlos”, who had only one hot dog vendor. The ad ended with the slogan “We sell 25 kinds of hot dogs”. Romano’s company, Phil’s Hamburgers and Pizza, Inc., was incorporated in August 1967.
The entire board of directors consisted of Romano, his brother-in-law and business partner Peter Winter, and a silent partner. Romano’s first foray into franchising began in October 1968 when he opened two California locations in a franchise agreement with White Castle Restaurants (“White Castle System”).
These locations were closed in 1969, due to the poor performance of the first two. At the urging of his brother-in-law and business partner, Romano explored franchising opportunities and in 1969 established a new company, which focused on food and beverage services.
Phil’s Hamburgers and Pizza Corp. was incorporated as a public company on November 17, 1971. In October 1969, Romano negotiated a franchise agreement with Ray’s Hot Dogs Incorporated of Arkansas.
